Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has been offered a new deal at the club in what’s one of the most surprising twists this summer. The Swiss international was thought to be edging closer to a move to AS Roma but that transfer is now unlikely after the Italians failed to meet the valuation for the player.
Arsenal demanded at least €20m for Xhaka who has two years left on his contract with the Gunners but Roma didn’t meet up with the valuation. Roma made several bids for Xhakawith the final offer said to be €15m including €3m in add-ons.
David Ornstein is one of the most respected British journalists at the moment and he confirmed the news of a new contract offer for Xhaka. It was disclosed that Arsenal have offered him an improved salary on his existing deal. Xhakahas already agreed personal terms with Roma and the Gunners have made sure that their new contract offer is better than the one offered the Swiss international by Roma.
Xhaka has been a controversial figure amongst the Arsenal fans since moving to the Emirates Stadium from Borussia Moenchengladbach in the German Bundesliga but a very good outing at Euro 2020 in the colours of Switzerland has forced some Arsenal fans to rethink their stance on him. These fans didn’t mind his sale this summer initially but the Euro 2020 tournament changed their stance on Xhaka.
Xhaka was one of the best midfielders at Euro 2020 as Switzerland reached the quarterfinals before they were eliminated by Spain via penalties.
